winona, you doll

OK WINONA RYDER APPRECIATION POST.
1) HER NAME omg what is that? Winona. Its such a pretty name and I WILL be calling one of my kids that. Also Ryder is one of my favourite surnames, espescially because it's linked to one of my favourite characters in literature: Charles Ryder from Brideshead Revisited.
2) FILMS
One of my favourite Winona films is Girl, Interrupted (1999) because it was the first film I saw her in and her acting is on top form guys. Also you get to see a lot more of her perf cheekbones because she has short hair. (lol) Despite the dark subject of mental wards and suicide I really liked it. Angelina Jolie (in my opinion) also plays one of her best roles in film here. Winona plays a mentally unstable, introverted girl who makes 'friends' with some girls in the same mental ward as her and I don't want to give anything away to those who havent seen it but its A***** If you have tumblr, you'll be very familiar with the stills from it bc tumblr seems to attract all that dark stuff..
me and A'Jolie keepin' it real
Also, Heathers (1988) is one of my favourites, because of the contrast Winona plays, compared to her character in Girl, Interrupted. Her half-hearted attempt to be in the 'in-crowd' at school is great because it discredits the stereotype of a clique of dumb desperate girls ruling the school, that most high school films have. I sat down to watch this film expecting a chick flick, and I wont spoil it but IT IS ANYTHING BUT A GIRLY MOVIE SO DONT EXPECT ONE. Also the 80s fashion is top-notch and as always, Winona adds to the eye candy <3 <3

 3) LASTLY HER TREMENDOUS GOOD LOOKS
Ok Winona is my girl crush, she has quite an original look with her dark hair, dark eyes and pale complexion but I think she's perfect. She has quite an English Rose kind of look, and I can't wait to see her in more films.

Margot Tenenbaum 4 lyfe

Ok here's a post about Margot Tenenbaum because she is the bomb dot com. Her distinct style and sultry personality is perfect and she is definitely in my top 10 Wes Anderson film characters #foshaw. She has a wooden finger, wears a fur coat and tennis dresses, secretly smokes and can turn on the TV with her toes. What more could you look for in a person.
If you haven't seen 'The Royal Tenenbaums', the film in which she appears, I highly recommend it -srsly guys it's my favourite Wes Anderson film, even better than Moonrise Kingdom or The Life Aquatic.
Margot is adopted and writes plays about her family, The Tenenbaums, and she is played by Gwenyth Paltrow. What more can I say PLEASE watch The Royal Tenenbaums. For your own good.

On another note, I just bought Morrissey's autobiography and I'm super excited to read it once I've finished Lolita.
I'm on half term finally so now I can actually scan in all my disposables of Swim Deep, Summer holidays and the camping and seaside trips I've been on.

Sharing with The Lisbon Girls

In France during Summer, we stayed with a family who had rented an old house in a small French village surrounded by hills. These are some photos I took of my bedroom, with only a blue tint added. They remind me a lot of The Lisbon Girls' bedrooms in The Virgin Suicides, especially with all the small religious items and the lace and bare walls. It was quite creepy sleeping there on the first night because I had just finished reading the book (of The Virgin Suicides) and if you have seen or read it, you know it doesn't end very happily. But it was really pretty in the mornings when the light shone through the lace round the bed and the whole room was a really bright white, so here are my photos:

Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a 13 year old girl

I've been in Italy for a week so I just got back and realised Google Reader is now obsolete, so I've installed the lovely naked lady on the right of my blog to help you follow me on bloglovin' instead..
Having been obsessed with the film, and because I read an article in Dazed & Confused about it, I read The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides last week and I'd definitely recommend it. The film quotes a lot of text from it, and it's very well written and even more romantic and lovely than the film is-It makes me wish I was blonde and naturally pretty looking and also I wish it was socially acceptable to walk around in a white lacy dress all the time.
Lux Lisbon, the 14 year old of the sisters is so pretty and perfect although she's a bit of a slut, but she's so cool and definitely my favourite girl. Even though she's wearing a really frumpy old frock it still looks beautiful on her and asdgaskl I wish I was Lux without the unhappy ending and strict parents..
I've cleared out my mum's old boxes of clothes looking for a dress like Cecelia's bridesmaid dress (below) but can't find anything, so now whenever I pass a vintage shop I'm hoping to find one that will fit me. #pray4Georgie

I've started melting a pile of candles together and I'm putting the Lisbon girls' prom photo in the middle like Cecelia's shrine in her bedroom (not mentioned in the film) and it looks so cutee I'm in lovee <3
I made the atmosphere quite shadowy and blue to match the film's theme seeing as it's such a haunting, sad story and it contrasts with the yellow flame and girly decoration on the shrine, I also like how the photos came out because of the flames' reflection in the plastic behind.

I also made a collage based on the girls' bedrooms and aesthetic, mainly inspired by Cecelia's religious icons and decoration, using my doodles and polyvore-

Lost in Translation

The other day I watched Lost in Translation,  which is a movie about ''a neglected wife (Scarlett Johansson) and a failing film star (it's Bill Murray, you have to watch it because he's brilliantt) meeting in Tokyo and sharing an unlikely bond'' -at least, that's how IMDb describes it. It was so cute, I loved it and the ending  was perfect(Although I felt I should have been really unsatisfied with it.)
My favourite scenes were when Scarlett Johansson just sits by her hotel window and looks at the view because it's so amazing looking down at Tokyo from so high up.
The city lights and late night/early morning scenes create a quiet, sleepy atmosphere, and (because I am obsessed with movie soundtracks) all the music they chose for it fit it so perfectly. My new favourite songs from the soundtrack, that I think really sum up the film are:

Just Like Honey - The Jesus and Mary Chain
Alone in Ktoyo - Air
More Than This - Roxy Music

The whole thing felt very muffled and tired, which I really liked because it expressed the mood of the two main characters perfectly, and seeing as it is set in the middle of a very busy city, was greatly contrasted. I literally know nothing about Tokyo and it all seems so foreign and far away, which was exactly what the theme of Lost in Translation is, so I found it really easy to relate to. In conclusion, this is now one of my favourite films and I recommend it to anyone. It was the perfect movie to watch late at night and fall asleep to, (which is how I first watched it) but it's not boring at all, so go watch it.

lolita

Copying Lolita's hair in the 1997 film- I watched it a few days ago, and I never knew Jeremy Irons was one of the main characters in it, he does all the acting and narrating the text really well.. He does a good 'Im-being-internally-tortured' face. Anyway, I loved the old 1981 Brideshead Revisited series with him in it as Charles Ryder. (the book 'Brideshead Revisited' is also one of my favourites)
Now that I've watched the film, I also sort-of want to read Lolita but what with exams and revision I can't even consider anything right now. Maybe in summer when the holidays start..

Okay short story-I was in Hampstead Heath once (in London) walking my dog, when I walked past this really angry looking man in full tweed and riding boots with a huge moustache and a tweed hat and it took me a full minute to realise it was Jeremy Irons so I was so amazed that I ran all the way back up the path he was on and just stopped right in front of him and almost fell over.. and then he just stared back at me and frowned even more, so I just apologized and backed away. But it was so exciting although I feel like he hated me for no reason.

the better-than-expected gatsby

Alright so I know I'm late to the party (no pun intended. *cringe*) but I finally got round to seeing The Great Gatsby at the cinema and I really enjoyed it! I am in love with Lana's song 'Young and Beautiful' and the XX's 'Together' is good too. I thought that although they used modern pop music in the party scenes, and it shouldn't have worked, it really did, because of the level of garishness and vulgarity they already had. My expectations of Carey Mulligan not being able to pull off the role of Daisy were also surprised because she really was perfect. And LEO WAS NEAR-PERFECT I hope he finally gets an Oscar..
Every setting, especially 'God's eyes' next to Wilson's garage and the room's of Gatsby's house were done really well and were exactly how I pictured they would.

I'd seen the 1974 version of Gatsby before and always thought it was really good, the house and general setting is much more beautiful and styled and obviously none of it is modern like this new one, but I think both films are equally great in their own way (except I think the 1974 Gatsby is actually more good looking and beautiful than Leonardo Dicaprio right now..) So here's the small amount of photos I could find from google images to go with it:

I sort -of tried to do a collage inspired by it but it failed and looks like a two year old drawing, please forgive me. And the scanner blurred it #failure
And obviously, everything is being affected by Gatsby crazing, so a ton of fashion labels have made some beautiful pieces inspired by it all coming back.. If i had one of these beautiful dresses or any clothes relatively similar to these I'd wear them every day, regardless of the fact they're so formal, because LOOK AT THEMM:

Okay so I've done the Gatsby post now my blog is as generic as everyone elses oh well okay thanks bye
